Welcome to The Brook Waimārama Sanctuary
Take a guided tour to maximise your experience and to learn more about what lies beneath the surface in the Sanctuary. It is amazing how much we don’t know. Even the most knowledgeable visitors are surprised by what they can learn.
Your guided tour/walk starts at the Sanctuary Visitor Centre where our friendly guide will meet you. All the guides have a lot of knowledge of the Sanctuary, its special features and stories. After introductions and an overview of the Brook Waimārama Sanctuary, you’ll be on your way. Expect the tour to take 60-90 minutes.
The tour will cover the history of the Sanctuary, including its pre-European history as a source of food and medicinal plants for local Maori people, its more recent history since the arrival of European settlers to Nelson (and the mammalian predators they brought with them), and the flora and fauna found within the Sanctuary.
